Habituation of exploratory activity in aged rats: effects of pyritinol
نویسندگان
چکیده
Acetylcholine (Ach) is a neurotransmitter considered to play a critical role in processes underlying behavior, learning, and memory. Pyritinol (pyrithioxine, Encephabol, PRT) is a nootropic drug that increases cholinergic transmission in the central nervous system. Behavioral habituation following multiple exposures to an open field is an experimental paradigm frequently used to assess the cognitive actions of drugs. In this paradigm the decrease of exploratory activity as a function of repeated exposure to the same environment is taken as an index memory. In the present study, effects PRT administrated to aged rats in powder form added to the diet (200 mg /kg / day, p.o., for 14 days) were evaluated in the habituation to an open field. A total of 18 aged rats were randomly assigned to one of two groups control (vehicle-treated rats, n = 8) and experimental group (PRT-treated rats, n = 10) and were used in the following procedure. In the exploratory task, the post-training treatment with PRT significantly decreased the number of total area crossings and rears when compared to the control group, indicating habituation. PRT treatment enhanced retention in the total number of area crossings and rears when compared with control animals. Taken together, the data of present study suggest that muscarinic cholinergic systems could be involved in the effect of PRT in habituation of exploratory activity to an open field in aged rats. *Correspondence: R. Effects of Gallic Acid on Exploratory Behavior and Locomotor Activity in Rats
PURPOSE: The present study investigated the effects of GA on exploratory behavior and locomotor activity in male Wistar rats. METHODS: GA (20 mg/kg) or saline were administrated orally to different groups of rats for 7, 14, 21 and 30 days. At the end of each experimental period, the changes in rat behavior were recorded in an Opto Varimex apparatus. The number of horizontal and vertical movemen...
متن کاملEnvironmental enrichment and isolation rearing in the rat: effects on locomotor behavior and startle response plasticity.
BACKGROUND Laboratory rats exhibit behavioral changes that reflect a continuum of early life experience, from isolation-reared to socially reared to enrichment-reared conditions. In this study, we further characterize the behavioral effects of isolation, social, and enriched rearing on locomotor activity, patterns of movement and exploration, startle reactivity, prepulse inhibition (PPI), and h...
متن کاملHabituation of exploratory behaviour in VPA rats: animal model of autism
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with multifactorial aetiology, represented as impairment in social behaviour, communication and the occurrence of repetitive activities, which can be observed in the early life. The core features are frequently accompanied by other manifestations, including limited environmental exploration. The aim of the presented study, realised on an animal model of a...
متن کاملAerobic activity improves spatial learning and motor activity in aged rats
Aging has negative effects on motor and cognitive functions, therefore finding appropriate strategies to prevent the decline of these functions is necessary. It seems that cardiovascular fitness obtained by aerobic activity is a physiological mediator that explains the relationship between physical activity and improved cognitive performance. The aim of this research was to assess the effect...
متن کاملEffects of Infantile Repeated Hyperglycemia on Behavioral Alterations in Adult Rats
Anxiety symptoms have been reported to be present in many patients with diabetes mellitus. However, little is known about the effects of hyperglycemia in critical periods of the central nervous system development. We assessed locomotive, exploratory, and anxiety behaviors in adult rats that remained from infantile repeated hyperglycemia by the open field and elevated plus maze tests. Our findin...
